Agv Pista Gp Helmet Review Introduction
The AGV Pista GP is the main example of a new engineering concept applied to helmets production.
Commercially replaces the GP Tech as top class product of AGV, but it is not a simple upgrade: it’s the “state of the art” of technology applied to motorcycle helmets.
Born for a strictly professional use, it was developed in partnership with Valentino Rossi.
The AGV Pista GP helmet is the result of a complex research activities based on a new philosophy of engineering that starts from the anthropomorphic shapes to reach the maximum level of comfort, performance and safety.
All this, with the aim to reduce masses, reduce aerodynamic drag, and obtain the best comfort for the rider.
A real study of applied ergonomics, proudly Made in Italy.

Also this time, AGV offers the typical stylistic elements of his race helmets that were already present on the GP Tech: oval lateral section, pointed chin-guard, large upper air intakes, broken base line.
But on the Pista GP all these stylistic elements are emphasized, the extreme research of functionality in each part, was transformed into a formal beauty that is unmatched in its class.
Two the elements that stand out from the basic profile of the helmet: the ventilation ducts of the IVS system and the tip of the chin. Also the spoiler, the only foreign element to the whole, has been integrated with great elegance.
What can we add: only appreciate how the AGV Pista GP has managed to combine design and technology in perfect harmony.
Exist only few graphic variations, the first version that was released was the “Project 46″, for obvious reasons. Then arrives the “SoleLuna” always based on Valentino Rossi styling.
Since this year is available the “Pista Gp Carbon” version: it’s the essence of technology. Pure, without graphics, naked …to enjoy the outer shell completely made of Carbon Fiber.
The whole project is based on the “Human Engineering” concept, it means design the helmet starting from the rider head that stay “inside”, and then going “out” trying to optimize every level of the “Helmet system”.
Target: greater safety and smaller dimensions.
The choice: realize the outer shell completely in Carbon Fiber.
The workflow: everything starts with 3D scanning of the Valentino head, then using FEM (Finite Elements Analysis) methods has been spent great attention to the study of padding distribution and energy absorption in case of impact.
Last step, the aerodynamic development with many hours of test in the wind tunnel.
These are the results:
-The AGV Pista GP breaks the limit established by the ECE regulations, it reduces of the 36% the impact energy transmitted to the head;
-The frontal cross section has been reduced by 3% and the lateral cross section by 6% compared with the GP-Tech helmet;
-Minimizes the X-drag resistance and provides an extraordinary level of comfort.
Produced in four sizes of outer shell, it’s available in seven sizes from XS up to XXL, the Medium size was split into MS and ML. The declared weight for the MS size is of 1275grams; we’ve verified a weight of 100 grams more.
The visor is another important primacy of the AGV Pista GP.
Compared to the GP Tech, the overall visor dimension has increased by 9%; but more interesting is that the visual range above the horizon has increased by 15°, in order to optimize the visibility “in fairing”.
Designed for race use, the visor is really of high quality. Very long the list of technical specifications: anti-scratch treatment, total protection from UV rays, anti-fog, tear-off arrangement, Class 1 optical standard (it means visual distortion-free), 3.3 mm of thickness and a wide series of interchangeable visors.
Extra Quick Release System (XQRS) for tool-free removal of the visor in few seconds.
The rotation mechanism has been reduced by 71%. This allows to increase, in that area, the thickness of the shell, and as consequence to improve the safety.
The visor is completed with the Microlock system that reduces the risk of accidental opening even in case of accident.
After unlocking the visor, before lift it, there is a intermediate position that helps to increase ventilation at low speed.
Every rider knows how important is the feel of a firm and comfortable positioning of the helmet.
The AGV Pista GP was designed following an “inside out” philosophy, and also it’s a true race helmet.
This two conditions have made it possible an extraordinary level of adaptability to different head shapes, unknown up to now. In fact the padding is fully adjustable in thickness and the pillows are made with variable densities.
Wearing the Pista GP you feel an high level of comfort: this is because the contact surfaces are free of seams and the lining are made of a very soft Lycra fabric, that thanks to the micro porosity ensures high breathability.
Obviously the linings are completely removable and washable, and have also received the hygienic treatment.
The nose and throat protections are also removable. The retention system is a strong Double D ring: could not be otherwise.
The ventilation system of the AGV Pista GP was designed to obtain improved efficiency with increasing speed.
To obtain this great result, AGV has developed the IVS (Integrated Ventilation System) technology based on wide ducts hollowed into the shell in which the air flows directly to the head; and also guarantees a considerable ventilation even when you are “in fairing”.
The IVS includes the three frontal air intakes, always open and protected by a metallic mesh, coupled with the two rear extractors, which thanks to the effect of depression, work to improve the cooling inside the helmet.
In case of rain you can cover the inlets using the dedicated plastic set.
We note that the size of the upper air intakes are significantly increased compared to the GP Tech.
The ventilation in the frontal area is obtained with two air intakes on the chin-guard (adjusted by an open/close switch) and with a nose deflector that also helps to limit fogging on the visor.
The whole helmet shape, from chin-guard up to the rear spoiler, was designed with the only aim to be functional to Aerodynamics: it means achieve high stability and reduce the X-drag resistance.
Just two example of the great results obtained with the Pista GP: even when you raise over the fairing, before a curve, you don’t feel the compression against the “air wall”. And also, the Z-Lift index has been reduced by 44%, so the effect of stripping of the helmet is really minimized.
Worthy of mention is the study that led to the actual spoiler shape, because it perfectly completes the continuity between the windshield and the hump of suit.
Other important feature is that in case of accident, the spoiler is designed to detach itself by increasing passive safety.
Conclusion
What better way to summarize the major features of the AGV Pista GP except to report the comments from the drivers who have tried it: “great aerodynamics, excellent ventilation, really comfortable: it’s like not wearing a helmet” ; “maximum visibility, it’s like moving from TV to Cinema” ; “This helmet is perfect in all its parts”.
And now the price: 1.100 € …this is the only real fault.
The AGV Pista GP definitely sets new performance standards on motorcycle helmets production.
