Freestyle Motocross (FMX) and a small part of its incredible history

The Motocross is one of the most celebrated and widely watched motorcycle races in the world. And why not. It has all the elements that make it worth watching. From riders racing at breakneck speeds kind of races to awesome and unbelievable stunts kind of events. The Motorcross has it all.

And the most adrenaline pumping of the lot is Freestyle Motocross, popularly known as FMX. A relatively young sport, only about 2 decades old. Yet it has gained almost a cult like status and popularity among bike lovers. It is a sport that contains eye popping and death defying stunts, for which you would need a heart of steel to just watch. God bless those who actually get out there and do those things!

Have you seen what they do? It is awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-blqSq1Dxq4&noredirect=1

Freestyle Motocross has evolved from regular motocross, when someone decided that regular motocross wasn’t dangerous or invigorating enough so they decided to have their own, more dangerous version of the event. And freestyle motocross was born. It is essentially a competition, international mind you, where skilled riders from all over the world come and perform various stunts and tricks, mostly aerial. A panel of judges evaluates each rider and gives them points and the rider with the highest points wins.

In Freestyle Motocross events, the riders perform 2 different routines on a course that includes different jumps at various angles. Most famous events include Night of the Jumps, X-games, Moto-X Freestyle National Championship and various others. There is no set pattern or structure to these events, just a rough course set out for the riders to perform their stunts on.

Some of those death defying, eye popping, spine tingling stunts are:

The Backflip:

The epitome of Freestyle Motocross. Considered as one of the most difficult stunts to perform, it was once even considered impossible. It is one very dangerous stunt, where many riders have suffered crashes. It involves riding a very heavy bike, into the air, flipping it, and coming down safely. Many riders have attempted it, but very few have been able to complete this trick, without crashing.
Kiss of Death Backflip:

One of the most risky tricks, this particular stunt combines two dangerous stunts into one. In this riders have to perform the kiss of death, which means doing a handstand on the handlebars, while doing a backflip. This stunt involves a lot of precision and proper handling as one small mistake could cost a rider a lot. Which is why, Kudos to those who attempt this, and nail it too!

The Double Backflip:

Now this, is the new Holy Grail of Motocross. After successfully attempting the back flip, which is dangerous enough as it is, riders now attempt the double backflip. That is two back flips. In one.

INSANE!
There are many more stunts in the world of FMX. Because for all these daredevil riders, there are simply no boundaries. It is always Game On for them.

P.S – If you want to catch some of these great people at their amazing craft, you can watch the FIM Freestyle Motocross Championship. The next one is on 21st of June in Basel, Switzerland. Hop over to http://www.fim-live.com/en/sport/freestyle/ for all the info you need.

If you were in Italy on June 16th 2013, you may have been either glued to the motocross coverage on TV or at the place of action itself – the Maggiora Track to see the dirt rise as your heart skipped a few beats. It was a killer event with all the right ingredients to make the last Sunday super-awesome.

Antonio Cairoli, the home rider finished third while the Frenchman Gautier Paulin took the first place with quite a deft riding display in MX1 by leading in almost all the laps. The second place on the podium was taken by Paulin’s team-mate – Ken De Dycker. Well Team Kawasaki did show mettle on the track and were sweetly rewarded as even the fourth place was taken by a Kawasaki rider – Jeremy Van Horebeek.

The 2013 Grand Prix event has started demanded a lot from its racers and every time, it’s the racer who dominate the track and give spectators memories of a lifetime.
